The New York Times has created interactive visualizations that allow users to compare a country’s standing in the Olympics based on the relative worth of gold, silver, and bronze medals. For instance, if a gold medal is worth 16 points and a silver medal is worth 2 points (bronze medals are always worth one point), Japan ranks third, whereas if a gold medal is worth 40 points and a silver is worth 16 points, Japan would rank fifth. According to the visualization, the United States and China, which have the first and the second spots respectively, are the only two countries whose standing relative to other countries does not change regardless of how points are assigned.
