This week’s list of top data news highlights covers July 22, 2023 to July 28, 2023 and includes articles on launching an AI-powered website designer and teaching robots to complete simple tasks.

1. Expanding Photographs
Adobe, a U.S.-based computer software company, has updated its Photoshop tool. The new version includes a generative AI system that can expand photographs with new content.

2. Collecting Evidence
The U.S. Agency for International Development has delivered autonomous drones to the Office of the Prosecutor General in Ukraine. Officials will use the drones to collect evidence of Russian war crimes in the country.

3. Redesigning Rooms
Wayfair, a U.S.-based online retailer, has launched an app that shoppers can use to design new rooms. Shoppers can upload a picture of a room and select a style, such as traditional, modern, farmhouse, bohemian, rustic, industrial glam, or perfectly pink. The app’s AI system will then place new fixtures, rugs, and furniture in the picture according to the selected style.

4. Tracking Urban Development
Vancouver has launched a dashboard to track urban development in the city. Residents can use the dashboard to view data on commercial, industrial, and residential projects.

5. Transcribing Medical Conversations
Amazon has launched a tool that uses an AI system to transcribe and summarize conversations between medical providers and patients. Providers can use the system to record patient notes in electronic health record systems more efficiently.

6. Mowing Lawns
Officials at the Dallas Forth Worth International Airport have partnered with Robin Autopilot and Graze, two U.S.-based landscaping technology companies, to automate lawn maintenance. The two companies will use autonomous mowers to maintain over 14,000 acres of grass at the airport.

7. Designing Websites
Universe, a U.S.-based technology company, has launched an AI-powered website designer. Users can submit text prompts to the AI system and answer questions about their planned website to receive a website layout.

8. Teaching Robots
Google has created an AI system that can recognize objects and direct robots to fulfill requests related to objects. Researchers can instruct robots with the system to follow simple tasks, such as picking up glasses or throwing away trash.

9. Listening to the News
Artifact, a U.S.-based news app, has partnered with Speechify, a U.S.-based audio technology company, to launch an AI-powered feature that can turn written text into audio. Users can listen to news articles on Artifact in one of more than 30 voices, including Snoop Dogg’s and Gwyneth Paltrow’s.

10. Supporting Soccer Teams
Snap has launched new augmented reality lenses to celebrate the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Soccer fans can use the lenses to try on the U.S. Women’s National Team jersey, view information on the tournament, and show support for their team.
