The New York Times has used data from the Kyoto Institute of Technology in Japan to create a 3D data visualization that shows how respiratory droplets from infectious diseases can spread indoors. The simulation shows a person coughing or sneezing creates both large and small droplets and that large droplets typically drop to the floor or break into smaller droplets. The small droplets can remain suspended in the air and travel as far as 26 feet, but the U.S. Centers for Disease Control believes most transmissions of COVID-19 happen through large droplets.
