BBC has created a series of data visualizations that demonstrate the severity of locust swarms that are consuming crops and threatening food supplies in nations such as Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya. The visualizations show that more than 15 countries have reported swarms this year and that a 1 square kilometer swarm consumes enough food for 35,000 people. Swarms can grow much larger than this size—a large swarm in Kenya had covered an area of 2,400 square kilometers.
