U.S. Representatives Introduce Bill to Fund Prizes for AI Research
U.S. House of Representatives AI Task Force chair Jay Obernolte (R-CA) and co-chair Ted Lieu (D-CA) introduced the bipartisan AI Grand Challenges Act, which instructs the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish a program to award prizes promoting AI research, development, and commercialization in various sectors, from cybersecurity to agriculture and rural development. The bill directs NSF to collaborate with the National Institutes of Health to establish a prize competition to advance solutions addressing the most lethal forms of cancer using AI.
Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks California’s Election Deepfakes Law
A federal judge in the Eastern District of California has temporarily blocked California’s recently adopted law, AB 2839, which prohibits intentionally distributing advertisements or election communications that contain computer-generated deceptive content within 120 days of an election. The judge’s decision was based on concerns that the law may be unconstitutional and infringes on First Amendment rights by restricting political parody.
